Westinghouse Electric Company LLC which was started operating since 19th century, offers a wide range of nuclear plant products and services to utilities throughout the world, including fuel, service and maintenance, instrumentation and control, and advanced nuclear plant designs. Nearly 50 percent of the nuclear power plants in operation worldwide, and nearly 60 percent in the United States, are based on Westinghouse technology.

The vision and mission of the company is clearly defined that to supply leading-edge nuclear technology to satisfy the world’s growing demand for energy. Besides increasing the competitive between the company and market needs, Management committed to develop a high-commitment culture that would motivate employees to feel sense of responsibility on their work. Employees are on salary, and raises were based on performance. Employees worked in teams and tracked and monitored their own performance.
The Challenge
98% of attendance from workers was not being achieved after 18 months of operation. Management didn’t have a system in place to track attendance specifically. Each 1 % point drop in attendance cost the company and additional $80,000. Besides that, hiring temporary workers seems conservative and didn’t account for lower team productivity, increased scrap costs, lost customer orders and etc.
The Solution
Managers and employees were formed to design and implement a process to monitor attendance and make suggestions for improvement. They designed a program which to motivate employees to meet or exceed a 97% attendance rate.
