Towngas

The Hong Kong and China Gas Company (Towngas) is the oldest public utility in Hong Kong and the first gas utility in the Far East. "To provide our customers with a safe and reliable supply of gas, and the competent, efficient and friendly service they expect, while working to preserve, protect and improve the environment" is the mission of Towngas. This mission is important in fostering the "caring" corporate culture, and the Towngas Voluntary Team stands as a testimony to this spirit.
The Company was inaugurated in England in 1862. Town gas was fIrst supplied to Hong Kong in 1864. At that time, there was only 24 km of mains supplying 500 street lamps and selected buildings. Today, our supply network has been extended to 2,925 kilometers serving over 1.3 million customers. In 1960, Towngas had the Company shares listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong, and later transferred its corporate registration to Hong Kong in 1982. At that time of transfer, there were only about 2,238 Company shareholders.
In Mainland China, the Company has already established a number of joint ventures. For example, Panyu Hong Kong and China Gas Limited commenced operation in 1995.
Towngas' voluntary service has a history of more than twenty years. Unlike other companies, Towngas' voluntary service is promoted and organized by the Sports & Recreation Club of the Company. The Sport & Recreation Club, which is an independent body in the Company, was established in 1958, and the members are appointed by the Managing Director. Apart from organizing sport and recreational activities for the employees, the Club is also responsible for promoting and organizing community service and charitable activities.
