Among the active group members in this phase there were some discussions which for
few times lead to some other forms of verbal conflict. This was mainly due to the
communication problems as some group members, although participating in the meetings,
did not actively speak their minds until the last decisions were taken. This resulted to
some delays in gaining agreements and repetitive discussions as the personal agendas
were not openly discussed in the right time. This can be argued that the team environment
was not the limiting factor and it was mostly an individual feature.
The important points in successfully overcoming the conflicts in this stage were the
patience, resilience, calmness, sense of humor of the members (even the impatient
member) used to face the situation. These features, specifically the resilience, calmness
and patience are among the common features of the group members which helped in all
the stages.
In this stage the members with more potential for controlling and leading the group, due
to their Belbin’s team roles, were gradually and naturally recognized by the group
members and became the main points of contact by them. Although, regarding the other
features of these members, again they naturally avoid dominating the group or promoting
the limited channel of communication.
The group performed the task successfully, overcame the conflicts and took step to the
next stage.
Norming and Performing Stages
The next step was taken with a considerable time delay after the storming phase and it is
better to say that the norming and performing stages started simultaneously, although the
foundations for norming in behavioral aspects was formed implicitly beforehand.
