Schindler's history dates back to 1874, when it
was founded by Robert Schindler.The company
is one of the leading global manufacturers of
elevators, escalators and moving walks, with a
strong network of over 1,000 branches spanning
every continent. Schindler develops, engineers,
produces and installs mobility solutions at airports,
train and subway stations, and other public and
government buildings, as well as in offices,
commercial properties, residential buildings and
even cruise ships. Its comprehensive service
offering ensures the smooth functioning of these
installations and customised solutions are available
for the modernisation and replacement of units.
Currently, the Schindler Group employs around
44,000 staff world-wide and comprises two core
areas of business: elevators and escalators, which
contributed roughly 70 per cent to sales in 2006,
and also, an IT distributor in Europe, accounting
for the remaining turnover.The Schindler Group
had a turnover of US$ 8.9 billion and a net income
of US$ 408.8 million in 2006. Over 46 per cent
of the turnover from the area of elevators andescalators comes from outside Europe. Its
manufacturing plants worldwide are certified by
the ISO 9001 quality assurance standard.The
parent company Schindler Holding Ltd. is listed
on the SWX Swiss Exchange.
