As the deciding council member for the Malathion pesticide vote I am going to say yes. This is something that has to be done in Genericville. This city has already had people with illnesses from the mosquito population and something has to be done to stop it from happening to anyone else. I know some of the people in the city do not want this done but I feel it is necessary for a few reasons. I will explain further.
West Nile Virus is a disease that spreads primarily through mosquitoes. Genericville has a wide river that runs through it and mosquitoes are attracted to water. According to a study done by the Center for Disease Control there were 4,269 WNV cases in the U.S in 2006 and 177 were fatalities. Based on the rainfall and the testing of the birds, there could be 50 cases of WNV in Genericville and two of them can be fatal this year alone. This city is a place where tourists go so there will be a lot of people there in the summer season when the mosquitoes will be out and about. We cannot put our people and the tourists at a higher risk. In order to control the mosquito population we need to use the Malathion application.
I understand there is some concern about the people in Genericville who might not realize how harmful the pesticide application will be. There are directions we might follow and are safety precautions that are required and some of the people in the city might not think they are im ...
