Ryman Healthcare Limited is a public company listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange with 500 million shares on issue. Ryman Healthcare Limited was established in 1984, with clear objective to become the leading provider of healthcare facilities for the elderly in New Zealand. The company and its subsidiaries engage in the development, ownership, and operation of retirement villages, resthomes, and hospitals for the elderly. It also operates independent and serviced apartments. Ryman’s customer base is those aged between 75 and 84, which is the sector of the elderly care industry experiencing the most dramatic population growth.
The company has operations in Invercargill, Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Lower Hutt, Napier, Hamilton, and Auckland. The headquarters is in Christchurch, New Zealand. Currently the company operates 17 retirement villages nationwide, employs over 1,500 staff members and provides services to over 3,000 residents throughout New Zealand.
Ryman is a six times winner of the Australasian Aged Care Housing Awards for best retirement village in New Zealand.
Ryman’s activities were originally confined to the South Island of New Zealand until an injection of NZ$15m in February 1997 by Direct Capital and Ngai Tahu Equities Ltd, which allowed Ryman to expand into the North Island and commence development of two new retirement village complexes. The expansion led to Ryman more than doubling its after tax profit to NZ$6.2m for the March 1999 financial year.
