Religion

Complementary intertwining of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism began between the 3rd and 7th century BCE.  Confucianism= Kong Fuzi, born 551 BCE.  He spent his life preaching ideas to bring peace and harmony to one another.  Not necessarily a religion, but a set of moral and social values.  Daoism= Laozi, born 200 CE.  His idea was a philosophy concerning a way of looking at life and thinking about things.  Laozi wanted people to be closer to nature.  

Confucianism- Analects and Confucian Canon were texts written after his death by his students.  Daoism- the Dao de Jing, written by Laozi himself and later on, the Zhuangzi text

Worship can be done in temples or shrines in the home.  Belief in deities, heroes, saints, enlightenment and cosmic forces.  Meditation and quiet contemplation very important in the Chinese culture.

Confucius’s Birthday:  Celebrated in Confucian temples with costumes, music, and dance.  Sept. 28
Chinese New Year:  Begins on the 1st day of the 1st lunar month- between Jan 21 and Feb 19.
Clear and Bright Festival:  occurs 2 weeks after the Spring Equinox.  Reunites families and renews ties with the dead.

Belief in every person has 2 souls.  At death, 1 soul departs from the body and ascends upward to ultimately reside in the ancestral tablets found on the domestic altars in Chinese homes.  The other soul sinks into the ground with the body where it remains if the burial was properly done, otherwise if burial was not performed correctly, the spirit of the deceased will haunt the living as a ghost until it has been propitiated.
