Introduction
Ethics in academics is the utmost importance. Maintaining high ethical standards and avoiding the temptations of plagiarizing in a technologically advanced world is a must for students. This paper discusses what plagiarism is, how to recognize and avoid plagiarism, and why students still plagiarize college assignments. The use of technology in the academic institutions has increased the abuse of plagiarism by students. Plagiarism, whether intentional or unintentional, can not be tolerated in an academic environment.
What is plagiarism?
What are the different types/forms of plagiarism?
There are several different types of plagiarism. They are the ghost writer, the photocopy, the potluck paper, the poor disguise, the labor of laziness, and the self-stealer.  All of the types are basically self explanatory.  Most of these types are very intentional types of plagiarism, but there are a few of non-intentional types.  One of the types of non-intentional plagiarism is where a person cites some of the sources but not the entire particular source.
How to recognize plagiarism
There are six steps in recognizing plagiarism.  Step 1 would be to compare the words in an assignment with the normal way of how the student speaks or writes as a whole.  If the paper doesn’t read or sound like something that the student would write or speak then most likely it is plagiarism.  Step 2 would be to read over the documentation to make sure that all of the steps that are required for the paper were completed.  If any of the steps were skipped then the paper may not be the students own work.  Step 3 would be to make sure that the sources that were cited as being used actually exist.  Step 4 would be to make s ...
