PERFORMANCE MEASURES AT THE WORK PLACE


In today’s workplace is it imperative to have measure to gauge performance and it clearly should be defined when hiring what those performance measure are. Big corporations now thrive on established work units with clear guidelines that let employees know what is expected of them. However, in the ‘Mom and Pops’ establishments these efforts are not as clearly defined and employees and left up to the owners own judgements and feeling whenever any type of work review comes up. This creates a situation where employees work more towards trying to understand the owners temperament in order to gauge how any review – that comes up at anytime – will gauge their performance. This creates a situation where employees while enjoying times of prosperity at the work place are left to deal with whatever comes their way when the business is not doing so well.

Performance measures, what exactly are they measures of and how do they work to build a working environment where both the owners of a business and the employees feel that their contributions are relevant? There are the stringent and clearly defined performance measures used in businesses that have grown and been established for a long time. There is also the lack of consistent performance measures in new businesses or in establishments that have long existed and been successful at a laisse faire attitude towards managing employees. These different standards are the basis of which I will examines the lack of performance measures and what they ultimately mean for a business and the success that has been achieved with clear performance measures that leave no room for inconsistency.
