With the growing number of people working in positions throughout organisations leadership has inevitably become a growing and changing concept. Where previously a more autocratic style of leadership dominated it has now shifted to a more participative style of leadership.
Along with the change and growth various questions have been brought about regarding leadership which scholars, managers and organisations attempt to answer in various forms of literature and even courses to teach effective leadership. This review will focus on leadership and the attributes it is associated with.

“You are a leader only if you have followers” (Aubrey C. Daniels and James E. Daniels 2007 pg 5). Using this statement Aubrey C. Daniels and James E. Daniels proceed to explain that “this statement while simple … makes the suggestion that any analysis on leadership should be on the relationship between the leader and the followers, not just the leader” (Aubrey C. Daniels and James E. Daniels 2007 pg 5).
This assists in defining how leadership is discussed, that being the relationship between a leader and the team of individuals he leads and how to make the relationship a successful engagement in order to effectively complete a task.

The idea that the position of leader refers not only to the individual but the relationship as a whole is reflected through several text with authors having the same impression of the term leadership, “We … define leadership as the process of influencing people and providing an environment for them to achieve team or organisational objectives. Effective leaders help groups of people to define their goals and find ways to achieve them” (Steven McShane and Tony Travaglione, 2003 p466 ...
