Philip H. Knight and Bill Bowerman are the creators of Nike Inc., first known as Blue Ribbons Sports (BRS).  They began their relationship at the University of Oregon where Bill Bowerman was Phil Knight’s track and field coach. In fact, in 1964, they created Blue Ribbons Sports to provide athletes with better-quality shoes. Their first year sales were only around $8,000. It wasn’t until 1971 that the Swoosh logo and the Nike brand name were introduced. Nike being the Greek winged Goddess of victory and the Swoosh trademark symbolizing a wing of the Goddess. The company finally went public in December 1980. The 80’s were marked by revenues reaching over $1 billion as well as Nike’s International expansion through their marketing campaign “Just Do It”. Another big marketing move was the signing of Michael Jordan to be their product spoke person and his endorsement of the “Air Jordan”. Only about 10 years later, in 1991, they passed the $3 billion revenue benchmark. By the mid 90’s, Nike took over the athletic footwear market and were beginning to be a truly global brand. However, being bombarded with negative publicity from environmental and social advocates in the late 90’s, Nike finally announced a series of changes in their Asian workforce like an increase in the minimum wage, better air quality standards and by allowing random inspections of factories. So far, Nike strongly came back in the early 21st century by developing everything from footwear, equipment and accessory products worldwide. In addition, they have been constantly creating innovative products and successfully marketing them. They directly employ around 30,000 workers globally and last year’s revenue broke the $18 billion cap....
