Introduction:

Most concepts with many applications do not go from the idea stage to the production stage without difficulty. Some concepts require more incubation time to allow technology to advance and a product market to develop. Speech or voice recognition technology has taken a long time to mature. The product market has enormous growth potential. Speech recognition technology has applications in warehousing, grocery distributing, manufacturing, cellular phone messaging and transcribing services, automating phone service, and controlling military aircraft.

Summary:

A recent survey conducted by Applied Research Center (ARC) Advisory Group concluded speech recognition technology has evolved beyond an “emerging technology employed by early adopters to common practice,” (Trebilcock, 2007, p. 13) yielding a rate of Return on Investment (ROI). In 2003, if a warehousing company was deciding whether to purchase voice or pick-to-light technology for each order picking, management preferred choose pick-to-light. Today, management prefers speech recognition technology for order picking. The survey exhibits several key trends in speech recognition applications. No longer is speech recognition technology for large businesses with income over $1 billion per year, 18% of the respondents had income of $250 billion, but less than $1 billion per year; 25% had earnings  less than $250 million, and many participants had income of less than $100 million per year (Trebilcock, 2007).
