The greatest asset of the organization is its people. Discuss the theories of motivation which is applicable to ensuring a motivated workforce. Illustrate your answer with examples.


Organization is a coordinated group of people who function to achieve a particular goal. Without people an organization won’t be able to establish therefore people are consider the most important asset of an organization. “You have got to have people who believe in the organization and who do whatever is necessary to make the organization work” said Bill Rivas who is a CEO in Circuit City. Hence, the employees have to be motivated in order to perform their job efficiently to improve their performance. Managerial Approach, Job Design Approach, Organization Approach and Individual Differences Approach are the four approaches that can be used to improve the employee motivation and satisfaction in their job.

Hygiene factors and Motivator factors are Frederick Herzberg two factor theories that based on the organization approach. Hygiene factors are the features of the work environment such as working condition, salary and job security which will avoid creating dissatisfaction. They can determine the degree of the satisfaction of the employee. They help create a condition that is possible to motivate employees. Motivator factors are the aspects that can create positive feelings among the employee. Recognition, responsibility and challenging work are motivator factor. Motivator factors alone are not sufficient to motivate the employees. Employees will only be motivated if the hygiene factor and motivator factor are present at the same time.
