Frozen yogurt first was developed in the late 1970's. Dannon was one of the original in producing one of the earliest profitable frozen yogurt products in the 1970s. It became trendy and enjoyed early success during the 1980s and early '90s, as a low fat substitute to ice cream.( http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-frozen-yogurt.htm) In 1981, TCBY was one of the chains leading the way in being known for innovative yogurt flavors and exciting new products. For virtually a decade following the early 90’s, the frozen yogurt industry had been slowly declining. Per capita consumption of frozen yogurt declined from 3.5 pounds per person in 1991 to 1.3 in 2005, says the USDA Economic Research Service (PINKBERRY IS HOT)
However, in the last couple of years, frozen yogurt has seen a resurrection. Veterans of the previous yogurt boom, including TCBY, Golden Spoon, and Tasti D-Lite are still operating, but their newer contenders have a set of diverse business models. They are going after a younger market that wants not just a frozen dessert, but an experience.
