Mintzberg’s Schools of Thought

“Select a minimum of three of the schools of strategy identified by Mintzberg’s et al (1998), undertake a comprehensive critical analysis of the underlying assumptions, perspectives and paradigms stance.”


Mintzberg H Quinn B (1997) suggest that, “Strategy is the pattern plan that integrates an organisation major goals, policies, and action sequences as a whole. A well formulated strategy help to allocate an organisations resources into unique and viable posture based on it’s relative internal competencies and shortcomings, anticipate change in the environment, and contingent moves by intelligent opponent.” Mintzberg a strategic theorist also suggest that there are a number of influential factors, which affect strategy, which are discussed within in the 10 schools of though.

Mintzberg’s schools were complied from months and year of research, for the main benefit of companies. The schools help industries to understand their macro and micro dynamics of their company. His 10 schools included as mentioned in, Mintzberg H, Ahlstrand B, Lampel H, (1998) includes, 1) Design, 2) Planning, 3) Positioning, 4) Entrepreneurial, 5) Cognitive 6) Learning, 7) Power 8) Cultural 9) Environmental and l0) Configurative.

In this essay I will be looking closely at one of the many theorist, Mintzberg’s and his schools of though. Concentrating on three schools, which include, planning, learning, and the configurative schools.
