Introduction
When Enron first started out the corporate leaders put together corporate responsibilities and organizational policies as well as their ethical behaviors. They needed to show the public and their shareholders that this was a company that could be trusted to do business without any doubts about their ethical obligations. Management also needed to have a code of ethics and company policies that would enable them to conduct day-to-day business within the company, so that the employees felt comfortable to be able to make the right decision when faced with a difficult choice.
Corporate Responsibilities
The company launched a formal corporate responsibility program to ensure social and environmental policies are implemented. The board was comprised of senior management throughout the company to ensure all aspects of the company’s departments were covered. They took suggestions from their employees and came up with the company’s shared plan. Enron was one of the first major companies to have an internet site posted with project teams and business units with information, trends, policies, best practices and resources. They also launched a new program for new hires that incorporated information on Enron’s corporate responsibilities, to include respect, integrity, communication and excellence. Enron’s belief was that a strong corporate responsibility program would strengthen internal awareness and control of social and environmental issues.
