*The Underproducing* Paper Cutter Chanda operates a large paper cuter in a printing plant. He has been having personal problems at home and hasn’t been able to concentrate on his work. As a consequence, his output has gone down, which slows other workers ahead of him who are waiting for the cut paper. His supervisor, who is sympathetic to Chanda’s problems, says to him, “I know things have been rough for you lately. Don’t worry about your production rate. We can cover for you”. In the above situation, there are 3 factors to consider and these are: job oriented factors, person oriented factors, and organization oriented factors. I think the manager did not handle the situation properly and hence shows a lack of leadership skills. If 3 or 4 more employees had the same personal problem, the manager may keep on covering for them leading to low productivity and a possible environment for conflict, for employees will not be focused on the common tasks of the organization. However under person oriented factors, the manger does a good job for he/she sympathizes with Chanda. Under organization oriented factors, the manger does not do a good job for he/she is compromising output of the organization. Furthermore, supervisory balance in this case is demonstrated by the supervisor. Being a manager also involves the control of ineffective employees.
