Jesus, also called Christ, which means king or messiah, was sent by God to save all, who believe in him, from eternal damnation. It is believed that Jesus was born sometime around 6 to 4 B.C. in the town of Bethlehem in Judea. God chose a virgin, named Mary, to give birth to Jesus. Mary, who was engaged to Joseph, received word through an angel, that she would give birth to a saviour, who she would name Jesus. Joseph became hurt, angry, and embarrassed when he learned of Mary's pregnancy. An angel spoke to Joseph in a dream and explained how Mary had done nothing shameful against him. He was told that the child, that Mary would deliver, would become God's chosen son who would come to save the world.
Soon after Jesus' birth in a stable in Bethlehem, King Herod received news that a messiah, who had been prophesied in the bible, had been born. He instructed his soldiers to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and the surrounding cities, who were two years old and under. At this same time, an angel appeared again to Joseph in a dream to warn him about Herod. The angel told him to flee to Egypt with the mother and child.
