America is known as one country however during the times colonies were first settled they developed as two different regions. American colonies were originally established in hope of finding gold or increasing a country’s wealth. Diseases and animals were the main cause of most problems. Many settlers were fearful of the dangers they would face. Food hazards were a danger in the colonies. Milk was one of them. Milk was drunk straight from a cow. Pasteurization was not invented yet, so milk contained deadly bacteria. Dishonest merchants were another danger to colonial people. Some merchants would sell tainted food. Sometimes, they would mix chalk, plaster and water together to make milk. Often merchants added extra ingredients, like sawdust to the food they sold.
Another food hazard that effected colonists was a disease named gout. This disease was caused by eating too many rich foods. Mostly wealthy people got gout because they could afford the rich foods. Bad manners like gulping food down too quickly would cause indigestion.
Colonist drank too much alcohol. Not only did it affect the drinker it also affected their family. The drinker was no longer to able to provide food for their family. Since so many people were getting drunk it became illegal to get drunk. Over the years there were many stories of hardships. Winter was hard for many of the colonists. Often, not enough food had been harvested. They were forced to eat what they could hunt or fish. Their guns were too loud and scared away the animals.
