Introduction

Aim and Scope

The purpose of this report is to analytically evaluate a case study regarding an employee’s disability within the workplace and how his condition has caused disruption among the co-workers and affected the organisational goal. It focuses on discussing the organisationals current situation, how the problems could have been issued, what recommendations and future course of action is needed to satisfy all parties and to create a safe environment for all employees.

Method

The information used in this report will be collected from online academic journals, governmental and medical websites and from different legislation and acts.

Background

The case study adapted from Bratton & Gold (1999) concerns a trainee manager by the name of William O’Malley, who works at a large department store and briefly mentions one day to Ms Sally Taylor, the HR manager that he is terminally ill. Although Mr O’Malley rambles about a close friend who had passed away in Aids, he does not clearly mention his sickness and even though he has a doctor’s note describing his illness as shingles, he briefly reveals to Ms Taylor that he could expect to live for two years at best. Later that day, Ms Taylor confides her feelings of that meeting to a collegue and Mr O’Malley goes on a sick leave for six weeks. Once he returns back to work, the co-workers are overwhelmed by his complete change of appreance as his cheeks were sunken, his eyes circled by dark rings and he had a walking stick due to unsteady frame. He had also lost 15 kilos and had skin eruptions on his legs.
