The current status seems to be that of someone in charge of rationing books!
There is a total mismatch of the demand and supply situation of books (why should we return the book in one day when someone else has to take it?)
This creates a situation where the IRSC librarian spends 99% of her time in enforcing discipline and performing the circulation function.
1. There is overemphasis on circulation function
2. Since the library is new, the acquisition function seems to be taking too much time.
It’s odd that many books are not available – one cannot select from a ‘spectrum’ of books – see the poor state of collections in Organizational Behavior.
Further, there is no tangible effort to expand the domain of information available at the library.
There is no system by which students can ask for help in a dark area where they do not get information.
However, further analysis reveals that we need an ‘Academic librarian who is specialized in Management (Maybe has an MBA along with library science!) that gives support to all the members of IRSC – from the researchers and lecturing staff.
The person concerned should manage, organize, evaluate and disseminate information, in the specific academic area of management.
Academic librarians should work with electronic resources (PROQUEST) and respond to students area of difficulty by sending them prompt emails / giving a call / handing them a printout. Electronic databases should be under the librarian’s control.
They should be able to facilitate and support learning by teaching information retrieval skills to students and staff.
