Henshaws Shoes- Northampton Facts:

1.    Henshaws is a long established, traditional family business.
2.    Business is facing difficulties, mainly because of STEEP factors.
3.    There is flat organisational structure.
4.    Henshaws is a “club” according to Sonnenfield’s classification.
5.    Sales are declining, costs are rising and production is resulting in excess stock.
6.    Brenda’s power source is “personal power”
7.    There is possibility of conflict to arise.
8.    Profitability is reduced, and carrying on as it is should not be an option.
9.    There are suggestions/proposals from different members.
10.    Good brand image, prestige product.
11.    There are made to measure (tailored) and ready made products.

Problems:

1.    There is need for change but board members have different values, expectations and agendas.
2.    There are marketing problems.
3.    Assume staff and management are threatened; their prime needs are under threat ( Maslows)
4.    Brenda is afraid of conflict.
5.    They are working in separate groups, lacking team work. They are part of formal groups as wells being part of primary groups, balancing those might be problem.
6.    Influence problems.
7.    Meeting needs a strong chair.
8.    There is resistance to change, especially from the chairman ( resilience of existing culture)
9.    There are no SMART objectives, direction is unclear.
