It is standard for laptop computer manufacturers such as Toshiba, Apple, Hewitt Packard, and others to offer customers a one-year service warranty with the purchase of a new laptop computer. This add-on service gives purchasers the opportunity to protect their new computers against defects in the hardware, monitor, modem, and other internal components. If repairs are necessary, parts and labor are covered and in many cases the fees associated with transporting the laptop back and forth from the owner to the repairman. Warranties do not cover damage related to software or harm done to the laptop by the owner himself or someone else, including theft. The standard term for a laptop warranty is one year but it is possible to extend warranties for two or three years at an extra cost and with additional services included.
It is my opinion that current warranties do not serve a useful purpose to a majority of customers purchasing laptop computers. With the recent rapid progress of technology, many computer users now find themselves replacing their laptop every one to two years, although any decent laptop can last at least four good years. When asked his opinion on how often to replace a laptop, one computer man said, “four years is an eternity in the high-tech world”. In other words, many feel it is worth it to pay more for the advantage of new technological enhancements that might provide potential gains or conveniences.
Considering this, warranties as they stand are useless to the average computer customer who is planning his next laptop purchase before he even finishes paying for the first. Warranties then can ...
