Cheick Oumar Sissoko’s movie “Genesis” gives an interesting look into the African perspective of the book of Genesis chapters 33-37, the conflict an rivalry between brothers Esau and Jacob who were condemned to hate each other. Esau, the hunter and elder brother of Jacob was a revengeful man, who gave up his birthright. The film begins with Esau, his sons, and followers off in the hills looking in on Jacob and discussing his time to come. The story begins with Jacob and his wife arguing over the actions of their daughter, Dinah, which is very confusing. She is washing the tunic, which turns out to be their supposedly dead sons Joseph’s. Jacob had already been in morning for 20 months, but was set on continuing to be until his death. After, the argument Dinah goes out for a walk and runs across Schechem, which is the Prince and son of Hamor. It appears she has came by and taunted and teased him before, based on the actions of the surrounding little boys. The village people gather to gossip and see what has happened, they sing and basically make a joke of the situation, as if they are better than her people. It turns out Schechem has raped Dinah, but now has fallen in love with her and wants to marry her. Hamor and his council, trying to do the right Christian thing it appears, go to see Jacaob, her father and ask for her hand to marry Schechem. As expected, there is a huge conflict which results in Judah (Dinahs brother) suggesting that Hamor’s tribe be circumcised like them, this is a Christian tradition and showing of faith and obedience. However, after all their tribe has complied with the request, Judah and his men attack them. They kill all the men and boys, burn their houses, and even rape their women.
