Gen 105 Distance Learning

Due Date: Day 4
• Recall a time when you gave constructive criticism to another student, a friend, or a
family member. How would giving feedback to a classmate in a distance learning
environment be different from giving face-to-face feedback? Compare and contrast the
two processes in a 100- to 150-word response.
• Submit a second 100- to 150-word response describing how, in your opinion, the
“distance” element of learning either makes it easier or more difficult to communicate,
and why
Giving feedback to a classmate in a distance learning environment is different because I cannot see the reaction of the person on the other end of my feedback.  I have to pay extra attention to how I word things so the person would understand my intentions.  The processes would be about the  same with the exception in a distance learning environment would ask more questions of my classmate to make sure I am understanding what they are trying to convey and to make sure they are understanding what I am trying to say.  With a face to face setting, I could watch for body language to make sure my feedback isn’t causing negative feelings.

For me, it is more difficult to communicate in a distance learning environment.  I like to be face to face with the person I’m trying to communicate with.  I learn as much from a person through body language as I do listening to what they say.  Because my classmates cannot see me and they don’t know me, I know I will have to be extra careful with how I phrase things so I can make sure they are getting my feedback the way I intended it to be....
