Functions of Management
Successful companies are held together by great managers. Managers must be; effective communicators, goal driven, positive, efficient and more. “There are four traditional functions of management: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling” (Bateman and Snell, 2007, p. 16).
A manager’s role in planning involves setting goals and deciding how the organization will achieve these goals. Managers have to gather a great deal of data to set appropriate goals including; shopping competition, analyzing finances, anticipating future trends, looking at current practices that work and the ones that do not, and much more. My current department plans for future goals by evaluating previous year’s enrollment numbers, the average rate the department grows in customer sales, and the number of enrollment counselor’s currently employed. Other factors will come into play such as current economy, job demand, and state education laws. In my previous position as a manager of a childcare center, I worked with my mangers to establish enrollment goals based on current number, where there was availability, previous years enrollment numbers, and the current economy. I then worked directly with my teachers to set enrollment goals for their individual classrooms. The enrollment goals directly reflected goals for net revenue as increased enrollment builds revenue. With any organization, setting goals is only the first step, organizing the details leads to reaching goals.
