1) Strategic capabilities can be defined as the resources and competences of an organisation which is necessary for its survival and prosperity. Meg Whitman would broadly describe the eBay’s strategic capabilities to be competitive and superior in performance based on the following threshold capabilities
? eBay’s advanced software is developed according to the sellers and buyers need thereby creating a virtual world-wide market.
? eBay’s sophisticated IT infrastructure allows everyday customers to trade without the need for large corporations. By providing individual auctions and online stores, eBay removes physical barriers between buyers and sellers.
? Until 1990s, the site was not robust enough to meet the high traffic but now after upgrading the software and making it more robust than before the usual shut down time is not more than 42 minutes. This has made the eBay website to be more competitive thereby making it more tougher for rival websites to be in par with eBay
? Category managers spend their days measuring and acting upon data within their fiefdom thereby controlling all the activities directly from all the 23 major categories. With the help of organising Voice of the customer groups, eBay can get feedback for free.
? eBay has created an “open market environment” and is more community focus thereby connecting people from different countries.
