Upon discovering a paper that has been blatantly plagiarized I believe that I would be disappointed and shocked but not surprised by the behavior of some of today’s students. I would be hurt to realize that at this level of education and technology some would think that they could actually get away with it. As a teacher I would think that the student must think that I have not seen it all. If I had to choose a course of action I would first ask why the student did it. I would want to know if the student was pressured into it because of time restrictions. I would have to explain that because of the bad judgment in error, it could put the whole honesty curve to the test when it comes to other assignments that were submitted or future assignments. I would have to flunk the student from my class, explaining that it would not be beneficial to either one of us. I would recommend school review to determine the course of action because it is not my decision alone to make. I would explain to the student that suspension is likely to occur. I would have a one on one conversation with the student explaining the importance of not using someone’s hard work as their own. Plagiarism is dishonest and cheapens your ability to prove you can put your own thoughts on paper. It takes away from your character as a human being. Dishonesty may include bribery, misrepresentation, improper computer use, and improper on-line course use. You could fabricate facts and even consider academic misconduct as part of the list. Technology even plays a hand in academic dishonesty. You could attempt to back date e-mails or even claim that your assignments were e-mailed (on-line class) and was lost upon sending it.
