Cabela’s: At a Glance
Cabela’s is a Sidney, Nebraska-based direct marketer and specialty retailer of hunting, fishing, camping and related outdoor recreation merchandise. Cabela’s has grown to become one of the most well-known outdoor recreation brands in the world, and has long been known as the “World’s Foremost Outfitter” (2007 Annual Report, 2008). Since going public in 2004, Cabela’s has seen a 66% growth in total revenue, $1.56 billion in 2004 to $2.35 billion in 2007. With growth like that, it is easy to see why Cabela’s continues to climb up cnnmoney.com’s Fortune 500 list, currently ranked 802 compared to last year’s 839 (2008).
According to Wikipedia.org, “Cabela’s has a distinctive look to their retail operation, a look which turns them into tourist attractions as well as retail stores” (2008). They feature museum quality displays of taxidermied wildlife, large aquariums, indoor mountains, and archery ranges. Cabela’s currently has twenty-seven retail stores, and eight retail stores that are being build or are on hold. The largest of these stores is 250,000 square feet and is located in Hamburg, Pennsylvania. In the third quarter of 2007, Cabela’s purchased S.I.R. Warehouse Sports Store, a Winnipeg-based specialty retailer of hunting, fishing, camping, and related outdoor merchandise. S.I.R. is one of Canada’s leading outdoor outfitters with a mail-order operation and a 44,000 square foot retail store that will serve as headquarters for Cabela’s Canadian operations.
