Unit 2 Discussion Board
(1) Two ways in which my used book business will be socially responsible:
a. I would support the local community by allowing my store to be used as a donation point for local charities. We can have a bulletin board on which different (registered) charities can post details of methods of contribution, et cetera. For example, a well-known charity by the name of Helping Hands collects food, calling cards, clothing, et cetera and then distributes them to local workers. Currently people make their donations on Fridays in the parking lot of the Mall of the Emirates. I would offer charities such as this the opportunity to work hand in hand with my bookstore.
b. I would make an effort to use all environmentally friendly items, such as selling cloth shopping bags to carry purchases in, perhaps with an incentive such as a discount for customers who bring their own bag. As Dubai is only recently becoming aware of the importance of recycling and beginning to introduce it on a city-wide level, I would also offer a small bin for customers to leave old books that are no longer sellable or any other paper items for recycling. This would help in a small way to the lack of recycling problem, as well as raise awareness about the issue.
(2) Some safeguards and controls I would put in place to ethically pursue my goals:
a. First and foremost, I would hire a computer designer to create a computer software customized to the needs of my business. The software would include such items as inventory controls, timings in and out (and overtime), track of sales, et cetera.
