Introduction

Environmental and pollution control regulations are set on 3 levels: the government's regulation of itself; the government's regulation of business; and suits by private individuals. Many companies are hiring environmental managers to deal with environmental compliance issues. In the Alumina, Inc. simulation the level of importance that is placed on preservation of the environment by the government and how the government enforces environmental regulation is pointed out. Ethical issues also arise for the business managers involved in resolving lawsuits that could be filed that would damage a company. The simulation also looks at ways of coming out of such dilemmas.

Alumina, Inc. has business interest in a number of different things. Automotive components and manufacture of packaging materials, bauxite mining, alumina refining, and aluminum smelting are some of the interest. Environmental regulation focuses on organizations and the affect the air, water and soil around us. Many organizations pollute the air and water; therefore, regulations are in place to guide organizations on how and why they should limit the amount of pollutants produced. The government has the responsibility of protecting individuals who could possibly be hurt by the high levels of pollution. Alumina was reported to be in violation of environmental discharge norms in a routine EPA compliance evaluation inspection. This violation took place five years ago, but business managers for Alumina, Inc.’s whole objective is to prevent a lot of losses, environmental and commercial are concern, upholding the public image of the company and abiding by the pertinent environmental statues.
