Logistics systems are the backbone of the Supply Chain Information systems because of their integrated transaction modules with common and consistent data bases. ERP system contains an integrated corporate wide database along with appropriate transaction modules to help logistics and supply chain operations. ERP also include financial accounting and human resource capabilities.
ERP has broader range of activities and capabilities than executions systems which are designed for more specific activities/operations.
Execution systems like WMS , TMS , YMS are designed to work in conjunction with firms ERP to prove specific functionality to support logistics operations. Most execution systems are bolted on or integrated into the ERP to facilitate data exchange.
4- The smaller firms can remain competitive in exchange of logistics information by using extensible mark up language XML. There are 3 reasons for this:
First, XML is not expensive to install. Second, XML is easy to maintain because it can be easily to converted to HTML. This makes easier to share and data between applications. Third, XML is more flexible allowing for broad applications and quick definition and extension of standards.
7- Radio Frequency Data Communications (RFDC) is used in relatively small areas like distribution centres to help 2 way information exchange. A major application is 2 way real time communications between mobile operators and the order selectors. RFDC offers an increased flexibility and responsiveness and have potential to improve services by using fewer resources. Advanced RFDC ( 2 way voice communication) is finding its way in warehouse applications. It leads the operator thru audible commands and wait for verbal responses and requests.
