Technology has had a profound effect with the advancements that have been made for the society that has been affected by diabetes. There have been changes and advancements to the way people manage and maintain their diabetes with the help of an insulin pump which can be worn discreetly. With the invention of the insulin pump that is designed to deliver insulin continuously twenty-four hours a day under the skin thru an infusion set. This set is a thin tube that can be placed under the skin and stays in place for two to three days delivering insulin from the pump when the patient needs it most. With this invention patient has reduced their rates of having hypoglycemic reactions and reduce complications that are caused from high glucose levels in the blood.
Before the insulin pump patients had to rely mostly on getting their insulin treatments manually this would be delivered by a needle. While most patients were good about sticking to the regimen, there were those that weren’t as strict with the regimen and suffered sever damage accordingly. Although it was up to the patient to give themselves their shots at the right time of day this would be problematic for the elderly for many reasons. For example the elderly who had suffered from arthritis were unable to hold the needle and give themselves the shots. This caused significant health problems for the elderly and was one of the reasons why the invention this pump was welcomed by the healthcare field with opened arms.
